People who install on-site micro generation, such as solar PV, invariably become much more energy conscious and try to reduce their consumption in order to maximise the gains from their generator.

A great way to see how much electricity your home is consuming is to use a plug in energy meter.  These don’t require any wiring, they simply clamp around your incoming supply cable and show the instantaneous consumption at any moment, plus cumulative figures.
